![]() The Poetic Places Fredericton app is now live on the Google Play Store! To celebrate its launch, poets and poetry-lovers alike gathered at Westminster Books in Downtown Fredericton last night. The evening started off with a welcome from Dr. Kathleen McConnell (also known by her pen name Kathy Mac), who showed off the app’s website to attendees. App designer and current editor Katlin Copeland spoke briefly about the process involved in developing the app. A number of talented poets participated in the reading portion of the evening. Among these were Shari Andrews, Margaret McLeod, and Lynn Davies. Davies, alongside her own poems, read poetry by M. Travis Lane, who is also featured on the Poetic Places app. Jane Tims, who will soon be featured on the Archive, also read. Light refreshments in the form of cookies, iced tea, and water were served. Poetic Places Fredericton (for those who haven’t heard yet) is an app inspired by Poetic Places London, which was created by Sarah Cole while she was Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the British Museum. Poetic Places Fredericton allows users to explore the city and the incredible poetry that’s woven into its fabric. Users will get a notification when they pass by a location that has a connection to a poem. They will be able to access the poem, a brief biography of the poet, and information on the place. However, all of the poems (and the corresponding biographies and place information) are available on the app regardless of where you are, allowing you to explore the poetry of Fredericton from anywhere (even the other side of the world, if you so choose). You can find Poetic Places Fredericton on the Google Play Store here. Poetic Places Fredericton is also available in your web browser, for those without Android devices. Until next time, Kathleen a.k.a. the girl who is excited for classes to start in a week and a half (and, believe it or not, loves school supplies shopping)

Infomercial voice: Are you tired of having a regular old August 24th evening? Are you looking for something new and exciting to do the night of Thursday, August 24th? Look no further than the Poetic Places Fredericton launch party!
Ahem. Normal voice: Poetic Places Fredericton is a mobile app. It uses push notifications to let the user know when they’ve passed by a place in Fredericton that is in some way connected to a poem written by a local poet. The user will then be able to access the poem, as well as a biography of the poet and information about the location. Currently, the app provides access to 20 poems and locales. “The app is designed to be an engaging way to explore the city of Fredericton, while learning about its exceptional literary community and its brilliant minds.” – Poetic Places Fredericton on Facebook While primarily designed as a way to go out and explore the poetic side of Fredericton, users will be able to discover the poetry of the city even when they’re not physically there. Upon downloading the app users will have instant access to each of the poems on the app, as well as all of the information that comes with them. To find out more about the app, check out this blog post written by the app’s editor, Katlin Copeland. The Poetic Places Fredericton launch party will take place on Thursday, August 24th at 6:30 pm. It will be held downtown at Westminster Books (445 King St.). It is a free event, and refreshments will be served. Hope to see you there! Until next time, Kathleen a.k.a. the girl who really has a hard time with intros (anyone else? I’m also terrible at conclusions) |
